Peaugeot has just lunched the last version from the rebuilt 2008 DKR 16 to hit this years' Dakar. The French brand has been working non-stop through last year to improve the DKR 16, which now comes with great improvements after having Carlos Sainz leading the development. Some days ago we already showed you Sainz, Despres, Peterhansel and Loeb joining the project Peugeot Dakar 2016.
Peugeot is looking for his fifth Dakar victory 26 years later. Carlos Sainz's feelings are good after partipating on the Rally of Morocco last October where he officially used the new car by the first time. "It is a wider and longer car. Now the spare wheels are placed on the sides, it is 200 kg lighter and the gravity center is lower", explained Sainz on a visit to Peugeot Sport.
Suspensions have been redesigned to approach more efficiently different grounds. The car has also better weight distribution and now the rims have magnesium on its composition and the car will wear lighter Michelin tyres. Using magnesium instead of aluminum decreases weight significantly.
Apart from aesthetic changes, Peugeot Sport has also modified its suspensions, aerodinamics and the engine to fight for a victory with the RWD vehicle. "Great news are that the rear suspension now is fixed to the gearbox, so we save all the weight from the chassis rear-end", says Sainz. "It is not an evolution, it is a revolution", finishes.
About the race, the driver from Madrid predicts that having a two-wheeled drive car can make the difference on difficult grounds: "We must be patient during the first week, more suitable for 4x4 cars". Bruno Farmin, Peugeot's sporting director, points out that "we don't know if the winner will be the fastest or the one with less amount of problems".
To face the challenge, the team has reunited some of the greatest stars in motorsport: Dakar awarded Stéphane Peterhansel, two times WRC winner Carlos Sainz, Cyril Despres, who jumped to cars after five wins on bikes category and Sébastien Loeb, who will make his debut on this edition. Altogether they have 17 Dakar victories.
